Newly acclaimed Sydney sculptor breaks with tradition.
Acclaimed, emerging sculptor, Lisa Solomon’s first solo show due to open next month at spirit level in Surry Hills, promises to break with tradition, revealing a complex and diverse conversation with a multitude of materials and forms.
Fresh from her hugely successful New York residency at Art Omi (awarded to one Australian sculptor each year), Solomon is no newcomer to the Australian sculpture scene. Winner of both the Young Sculptors Award and the AGNSW Director’s Award for work exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea, Solomon is renowned for her use of both traditional and non-traditional sculpture mediums.
Her upcoming solo show will be testament to this: from lyrical works in bronze and alabaster to highly structured pieces in iron, stainless steel and aluminium, Solomon’s mesmerising sculpture simultaneously calms and challenges.
The exhibition also features several unique pieces made from stones ‘discovered’ by Solomon while in the US and rare to Australia, including ‘Lizard Dreaming’ made from red and orange-hued Minnesota Pipe Stone and ‘Onomatopoeia’ from black African Wonderstone.
No two Solomon sculptures are alike, perhaps a testament to the fact that Solomon has worked across three continents, including the UK, Australia and most recently the US, coupled with her exploration of universal themes.
“It’s probably one of the most frequent comments I receive about my work, that each piece is so different. People are used to seeing sculptors with a distinct style”, states Solomon.
“My style, however, emerges from my inspiration and occupation with universal themes of transformation, harmony, science and the sacred. These themes are then resolved in the most appropriate medium and form.”
“When people understand this, it makes sense that my work is so diverse. Plus, I find it continually challenging both technically and creatively to work with an ever evolving array of materials”.
